Prominent Australian author Craig Silvey has been charged with serious child exploitation offences following a police investigation in Western Australia, sending shockwaves through the literary and education communities.

Silvey, 43, appeared before the Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday after detectives executed a search warrant at his Fremantle home on Monday, 12 January. Police allege that at the time of the search, Silvey was actively engaging online with other child exploitation offenders.

According to a Western Australia Police spokesperson, Silvey was immediately arrested and multiple electronic devices were seized for forensic examination. He has been charged with distribution of child exploitation material and possession of child exploitation material. The court granted him bail, and investigations remain ongoing.

Silvey is widely known for his bestselling novels Jasper Jones, Runt, and Honeybee, many of which are set in Western Australia and have received national and international recognition. Jasper Jones was adapted into a feature film in 2017 starring Toni Collette and has long been regarded as a staple of Australian young adult literature.

His work has featured prominently in school curricula and national reading programs, and he has twice been named among the Sydney Morning Herald’s best young Australian novelists. The allegations have therefore raised difficult questions for educators, publishers, and institutions that have relied on his work for years.

WA Police confirmed the matter is being handled by Child Exploitation Operations detectives and urged anyone with relevant information to contact authorities as the case progresses through the legal system.
