Nestlé has announced a voluntary recall of specific batches of its SMA infant formula and follow‑on formula sold in the UK, Ireland, and Northern Ireland due to the potential presence of a toxin called cereulide. The recall, issued as a precautionary public health measure, affects numerous products that parents and caregivers should not feed to infants or young children. There have been no confirmed reports of illness so far, but authorities and Nestlé urge caution.

Cereulide is a heat‑resistant toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria, and it cannot be destroyed by boiling or normal formula preparation. If consumed, cereulide‑contaminated products can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and food poisoning symptoms.

Nestlé stressed the recall is voluntary and precautionary and that all other SMA products and batches not listed remain safe to use. Consumers who have purchased any affected batches should check their product codes immediately and follow the company’s refund and disposal advice.

Why the Recall Was Issued

Authorities and Nestlé have said the recall is a precautionary step due to the possible presence of the heat‑resistant toxin cereulide in certain batches of the formula. Cereulide is produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus and can lead to rapid onset nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps if ingested. Although no illnesses have yet been reported, the recall underscores caution and baby safety as the top priority for Nestlé and food safety agencies.
