The Hong Kong Affordability Disaster: What Happened?
Yes, you read that right: a NIMBY (not in my backyard) disaster has struck in Hong Kong. That’s how bad it was. If you don't remember, last year, Hong Kong Passengers were forced onto overcrowded trains and now they're facing being stuck in high-density homes during a massive fire and evacuation. I mean come on!
Just think about it: It was already difficult for people living in Asia to find affordable housing. Now you have them all living together in one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Then you have people who have developed some of the most innovative building methods in the world and then it's all destroyed. You'd think that some sort of regulation would have been in place so this could have never happened.
Authorities have confirmed 44 fatalities in connection with continuing rescue efforts, including one firefighter. An additional 94 people are critically wounded as well. As rescue crews continue combing through the debris of what was once a community for thousands, it is anticipated that the number of casualties will continue to rise.
Another very troubling aspect of this tragedy is that more than 279 people remain unaccounted for and are presumed either missing or trapped inside the burning building. The rescue teams have been operating 24 hours a day searching for survivors and have been unable to determine whether more bodies will be found or if the number of dead will continue to grow.

Three suspects arrested: Who is to blame for this disaster? 🚔
Three individuals have been arrested in relation to the fire, including two construction company executives and one engineering consultant; all three suspects are charged with manslaughter due to the findings of gross negligence during the renovation process.
There are questions being raised as to whether or not these individuals can be held accountable for what has turned out to be an absolute detriment to Hong Kong: The investigation into this fire is underway, and authorities believe that the widespread use of flammable materials on scaffolds as well as on construction sites played a critical role in escalating this blaze to a disastrous level. The key question moving forward is whether they acted negligently or if this event was just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to corruption in construction.
As officials continue to investigate the causes, it seems more and more plausible that this incident was not simply an unfortunate accident; it is also a message regarding a major flaw in the construction industry and the hazardous practices that are being employed.
Moving Forward: What Can We Expect After This Catastrophic Incident?
With additional information coming to light every day, it appears as though the consequences of this fire have not been realized, nor will they be. In fact, because of the esteem with which many hold Hong Kong's reputation for innovation in the realm of construction, the fire's impact will likely disabuse many of the thought that Hong Kong's safety rating has always been as safe as it was believed to be.
Will this fire lead to similar stories related to other buildings? Is this fire indicative of a greater problem affecting many of the tallest buildings within Hong Kong? How many buildings are in the process of renovation that are comprised of flammable materials? What other tragedies must take place before proper building codes and construction policies are enforced?
But will it be enough to prevent further tragedies like this one? Only time will tell.
