What Happened
Thousands of Instagram users reported problems with the platform as a widespread outage disrupted the app's direct messaging system. According to user reports tracked by Downdetector, complaints began rising during the evening hours on March 10 as people struggled to send or receive direct messages.

A confirmed outage was also recorded starting at 2:48 AM on March 11, with reports coming in from the United States, Canada, and Venezuela.
A second wave of disruptions was reported on Wednesday morning, with the majority of complaints peaking at 8:59 AM IST, when users found they could not access Instagram through either the app or the website. Nearly 81% of users who tried to visit Instagram said they couldn't access the app, while close to 12% stated they couldn't access the website.
Scale of the Outage
According to Downdetector, around 10,725 reports were recorded from the United States. In comparison, users in India also experienced difficulties accessing the platform, with 252 reports, while about 135 users in the United Kingdom reported similar problems.
In India, 77% of users reported issues accessing the app, 13% faced problems with the website, and 11% experienced server connection issues. In the United States, 71% of users reported problems with the app, 19% faced server connection issues, and 5% reported difficulties with the feed or timeline. In the United Kingdom, 60% of users experienced issues with the app, 18% reported problems with the feed or timeline, and 12% faced difficulties with posting or publishing content.
The outage map released by Downdetector suggested that several major cities in the United States were affected, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York.
User Reactions
Some individuals posted that Instagram appeared to be down, while others stated that direct messages were not working for them. A number of users also said that the disruption interrupted ongoing conversations — some reported that the platform stopped working while they were in the middle of multiple chats, while others stated they were unable to reply to messages.
One user informed the company that their Instagram account displayed an error message saying earlier messages had failed to load, despite having a stable internet connection.
During the outage, users turned to other platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to continue their conversations.
No Official Statement from Meta
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the cause of the disruption or an estimated time for a full resolution. This follows similar, though smaller, intermittent issues reported by the tech giant's various platforms earlier this month.
Downdetector, which compiles outage reports from users around the world, provides a real-time snapshot of service interruptions based on submitted complaints. While the figures indicate how many users are reporting problems, the actual number of affected individuals could be higher because not every user files a report.
What Comes Next
Such outages can occur due to server issues, software bugs, or technical updates. In most cases, these disruptions are temporary, and services return to normal once the technical problem is fixed. Users are advised to wait until the platform restores full functionality.
The last major disruption to the service was reported several months ago, and the platform had been functioning normally in recent days before this latest incident.
