Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services exporter, is gearing up for the future by undertaking a comprehensive initiative to train its massive staff of over 5 lakh software engineers in the emerging field of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI).
While acknowledging that Gen AI is still in its "early days" as a business opportunity with smaller use cases, Siva Ganesan, the head of TCS's recently established 'AI.Cloud' unit, expressed confidence in the company's vision.
TCS, having disclosed its involvement in 250 Gen AI-powered projects, is utilizing the insights derived from Gen AI to enhance the efficiency of its ongoing client work.
Ganesan emphasized that the current focus is on smaller use cases, and the broader transformation, supplementing assets and augmentation, will unfold over time.
TCS is actively investing in preparing its workforce for the anticipated surge in demand for AI offerings.
Ganesan noted that the company is in an investment mode, not only ensuring its staff acquires the necessary skills but also establishing strategic partnerships.
While the timeline for the completion of Gen AI skillset training for the entire staff was not specified, Ganesan highlighted the significant progress made in the last seven months, during which over 1.50 lakh employees have undergone training.
Harrick Vin, TCS's Chief Technology Officer, expressed confidence in creating one of the world's largest AI-ready workforces.
Ganesan further mentioned that the skills imparted include a focus on non-tech areas aligning with the broader organizational goals.
Responding to questions about profitability and potential compromises due to the availability of tools like Chat GPT, Ganesan stressed the complexity and rigour involved in executing Gen AI solutions.
He emphasized the importance of factors such as security, confidentiality, and meticulous system architecture and construction, highlighting the dedication required for deploying and implementing these sophisticated AI systems.
As TCS positions itself for the AI-dominated future, it remains committed to maintaining high standards and delivering value through its Gen AI initiatives.
