The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has decided to invest $1 billion, equivalent to Rs 8,278 crore, in Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL), which will result in the acquisition of a nearly one percent stake. The announcement was made by RRVL, the retail arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), on August 23. This investment values RRVL at a pre-money equity value of $100 billion or Rs 8.27 lakh crore. The stake acquired by QIA will represent 0.99 percent on a fully diluted basis.

Isha Ambani, Director of RRVL, expressed that this investment by QIA serves as a strong endorsement of the positive outlook towards the Indian economy and Reliance's retail business model. She also highlighted that RRVL stands to benefit from QIA's global experience and successful track record in value creation. The investment is expected to enhance the company's strategic capabilities and execution prowess.

In facilitating this transaction, Morgan Stanley acted as the financial advisor to RRVL, while Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Davis Polk & Wardwell provided legal counsel for the company. For QIA, legal counsel was provided by AZB and Cleary Gottlieb. This significant investment aligns with Reliance Industries' broader strategies, including the potential public listing for Reliance Retail and efforts to reward its employees with stock options through share buybacks.

Led by Isha Ambani, RRVL has been actively pursuing acquisitions to compete with global giants such as Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart in India's retail space. Notably, in the previous fund-raising round in 2020, RRVL secured Rs 47,625 crore from various global investors, including sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the UAE, as well as firms like General Atlantic, KKR & Co., and Silver Lake Partners. During this round, the pre-money equity value was assessed at Rs 4.21 lakh crore.

QIA's CEO, Mansoor Ebrahim Al-Mahmoud, emphasized the organization's commitment to supporting innovative companies with high-growth potential in India's rapidly expanding retail market. He expressed anticipation for RRVL, with its visionary approach and impressive growth trajectory, to become a valued addition to QIA's diverse investment portfolio in India.

This investment from QIA signifies its growing involvement in Indian conglomerates. This year, QIA increased its stakes in the country by acquiring a 2.7 percent share in Gautam Adani's green energy business after the Adani Group faced a short-seller attack. This move by QIA aligns with its strategy of expanding its investments in India's promising and dynamic economic landscape.
