Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, recently embarked on a high-profile five-day tour of India, demonstrating the company's keen interest in the country's burgeoning AI market. In the backdrop of escalating restrictions on the export of advanced chips to China by the United States and the global quest for alternative electronics manufacturing hubs, India emerges as a strategic destination for Nvidia. Huang's visit was marked by meetings with tech leaders, and researchers, and even a one-on-one conversation with India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, centred on the potential of the AI sector.

Nvidia, renowned for its graphics processors pivotal to AI system development, perceives India, with its 1.4 billion-strong population, as a unique opportunity. The intensifying export controls on high-end chips to China, which accounts for a significant portion of Nvidia's revenue, prompted the company to explore alternative markets. Neil Shah, VP of Research at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, pointed out that India remains one of the few viable markets, making it a natural choice for Nvidia's strategic diversification.

During a meeting in Delhi with leading researchers, Huang articulated his vision of retraining a substantial portion of India's workforce and utilizing Indian data and talent to develop future AI models. He expressed his belief in the quality of India's engineering talent, particularly from institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology. At a news conference in Bangalore, Huang boldly stated, "You have the data, you have the talent. This is going to be one of the largest AI markets in the world."

Nvidia's interest in India aligns with the country's aspirations to bolster electronics manufacturing and harness AI to enhance its digital economy. India has committed substantial resources to establish chip manufacturing infrastructure, enticing major players like Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and Intel Corp. Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of Infosys Ltd. and a key architect of India's digital public infrastructure, emphasized India's strategic significance for Nvidia's future.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Huang lauded the potential of India in the AI domain. India's largest conglomerate, Reliance, announced plans to build AI computing infrastructure for the country during Huang's visit. The AI cloud will leverage Nvidia's supercomputing technologies. Additionally, Reliance and Tata intend to establish state-of-the-art AI supercomputing data centres, offering AI infrastructure as a service for various stakeholders.

While India has attracted Apple and Amazon to shift contract electronics manufacturing from China, semiconductor production remains a formidable challenge. Most cutting-edge chips, including Nvidia's, are manufactured in Taiwan. India is striving to catch up in semiconductor manufacturing and AI capabilities, but it faces hurdles such as a lack of exascale compute capacity and a shortage of AI software talent. Sashikumaar Ganesan, Chair of the Computational and Data Sciences Department at the Indian Institute of Science, stressed the need to build both AI infrastructure and a high-performance computing workforce.

Despite these challenges, India represents a rapidly maturing market for high-end technologies. K. Krishna Moorthy, CEO of the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association, highlighted the surging demand for Nvidia's GPUs in India's digital economy, driven by government mandates on data security and localization. Telecom giants like Reliance's Jio, with millions of data points generated daily, hold immense potential for AI growth. Moorthy believes that "the data generated from 1.4 billion Indians could set the country up for the next phase of digital growth," and Huang recognizes this as the frontier for AI-enabling chips.

Nvidia already maintains four engineering centres in India with 4,000 engineers, making it their second-largest talent pool worldwide. During his visit, Huang emphasized the importance of competitiveness in the evolving AI landscape, echoing his belief that companies must either "run for food or run away from being food." This underscores Nvidia's commitment to India as a pivotal market and its intent to play a significant role in India's AI journey.
