On October 4, Jio Financial Services Ltd (JFS), the financial arm of Reliance Industries led by Chairman Mukesh Ambani, announced that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has granted in-principle approval for the company and BlackRock Financial Management to collaborate as co-sponsors in setting up a proposed mutual fund.
JFS clarified that the final approval for registration will be contingent upon both the company and BlackRock meeting specific requirements outlined in SEBI's communication.
The partnership between JFS and BlackRock was initially revealed on July 26, 2023, when they announced their intention to create a joint venture named "Jio BlackRock." This 50:50 collaboration marks BlackRock's return to the Indian market, a significant move after its exit in 2018.
The venture aims to leverage BlackRock's expertise in investment management, risk management, and technology, while combining it with Jio Financial Services' deep understanding of the local market and robust digital infrastructure.
The goal is to introduce a fresh player into the Indian financial landscape, one that possesses a unique scope and scale.
During its first annual general meeting following its stock exchange listing, Jio Financial management highlighted that the joint venture with BlackRock is set to enhance the availability of diverse investment products.
The leadership team for the joint venture has already been identified, indicating progress in the collaboration.
In addition to the mutual fund initiative, JFS and BlackRock established a joint venture for wealth management and broking in India earlier in April.
Moreover, in September, they launched another partnership with BlackRock Advisors Singapore Pte Ltd to create Jio BlackRock Investment Advisers Private Limited, which will focus on providing investment advisory services, pending the necessary regulatory approvals
