Delta Corp, the prominent casino operator, found itself in dire straits as it grappled with an astronomical tax notice that shook its very foundation. On September 22, 2023, the company received a staggering tax demand of Rs 16,822 crore, equivalent to a jaw-dropping 3.5 times its market capitalization at the time. This colossal financial burden eclipsed the company's revenue from the last decade, sending shockwaves through the investment community.
The repercussions were swift and brutal. Delta Corp's shares plummeted as investors, panicked by the ominous tax notice, hastily abandoned ship. Within the same day, the stock hit a lower circuit, experiencing a harrowing decline of 15 per cent from its previous closing price. In its ruthless response, the market stripped away a colossal Rs 700 crore from Delta Corp's market capitalization in a mere half-hour of trading.
Yet, Delta Corp was not about to succumb without a fight. In a statement issued to the stock exchange, the company boldly asserted, "The amount claimed in the DG Notice is inter alia based on the gross bet value of all games played at the casinos during 2017-2022. Demand for GST on gross bet value, rather than gross gaming revenue, has been an industry issue and various representations have already been made to the Government at an industry level about this issue."
With determination in their hearts, the company declared, "The company has been legally advised that the tax demand is arbitrary and contrary to law, and the company will pursue all legal remedies available to it to challenge such tax demand and related proceedings."
However, this wasn't the first storm Delta Corp had weathered recently. Just a month prior, the company faced the abrupt resignation of its Chief Financial Officer, Hardik Dhebar, which left a leadership vacuum and raised concerns among investors. Two months before the tax notice bombshell, the company had to announce the postponement of its eagerly anticipated initial public offering (IPO) for its online gaming business. This move, too, had rattled investors and eroded their confidence.
These successive setbacks painted a bleak picture for Delta Corp, raising questions about its ability to navigate these turbulent waters successfully. The company's stock performance mirrored this uncertainty, as it teetered on the brink of uncertainty and faced significant headwinds in the form of regulatory and financial challenges.
Yet, it was not all doom and gloom for the company. In the quarter that ended June, Delta Corp managed to post a commendable 18.86 per cent year-on-year surge in net profit, reaching Rs 67.91 crore. Moreover, its revenue from operations clocked in at Rs 277.65 crore, reflecting a substantial 10.74 per cent increase compared to Rs 250.72 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal year. While these figures offered a glimmer of hope, they were overshadowed by the ominous spectre of the colossal tax notice hanging over the company.
Delta Corp, once riding high in the realm of gaming and entertainment, now stood at a critical juncture in its history. With its future shrouded in uncertainty, the company faced a formidable battle to defend its financial stability and reputation against the daunting tax demand that threatened to redefine its fate.
