Why It’s Called “The Ashes”
The name stems from a satirical obituary published in 1882 after England lost to Australia at home, declaring English cricket had died and the “ashes” would be taken to Australia. Since then, the England-Australia Test series has been known as The Ashes, with the small urn symbolising those “ashes”.
