A Major Real Estate Deal in Barcelona

Amancio Ortega, the man behind Zara and one of the wealthiest people in Europe, has made headlines again—this time for buying a major office property in Barcelona. Through his investment firm Pontegadea, Ortega has reportedly purchased a prominent building located on Avenida Diagonal, one of the city's most well-known avenues.

The deal is estimated to be worth around €250 million (roughly $283 million), making it one of the largest commercial real estate purchases in Spain this year.

The building is currently occupied by Grupo Planeta, a well-known Spanish publishing and media company, which uses more than half of the total space. It’s a striking structure, best known for its green, plant-covered facade, and has a deep history dating back to its former use by Banca Catalana until the 1980s.

Background on the Deal and Property

The property was previously owned by global investment giant Blackstone, which took control of it in 2018. Over the past year, Blackstone had been exploring options to offload the asset, and Ortega emerged as the final buyer. Interestingly, Ortega has stayed fairly quiet about the acquisition, with neither his firm nor Blackstone making public statements on the purchase.

This transaction marks Ortega’s biggest property buy in Spain since 2016, when he acquired the Torre Cepsa skyscraper in Madrid for nearly half a billion euros. While he’s made a number of real estate moves abroad since then, this deal shows he’s still deeply interested in securing premium assets at home too.

Ortega’s Expanding Global Property Empire

For those unfamiliar, Ortega isn’t just in the fashion business. Over the years, he’s built a massive global real estate portfolio through Pontegadea.

His investments stretch across major cities—London, New York, Toronto, Paris, Seoul, and more—covering high-end office towers, commercial buildings, and even energy and infrastructure assets.

According to reports, Pontegadea now manages property assets worth more than €20 billion globally. The firm tends to focus on stable, long-term investments in prime urban areas, and this Barcelona property fits right into that pattern.
