With a boot-freeing underbody CNG tank, stronger mileage numbers, and a freshened design, the updated Brezza is built to recapture ground lost to the Nexon and pressure Creta's entry price but it is arriving into a segment that has fundamentally changed.

Maruti Suzuki's 2026 Brezza facelift has been caught testing on Indian roads multiple times in recent weeks, and the spy shots reveal a product that is being rebuilt with a specific competitive purpose. The underbody CNG tank the headline change is not merely an engineering upgrade. It is a direct response to the two rivals that have most hurt the Brezza's sales standing: the Tata Nexon CNG and the Hyundai Creta.

Where the Brezza Currently Stands

The numbers tell a clear story. The Maruti Brezza dropped to fourth place in FY2026 UV sales with a 5 percent year-on-year decline. Despite being among the more dated models in the segment, it continues to see demand supported by Maruti Suzuki's wide network, but its 1.5-litre petrol engine has been criticised for lacking mid-range performance, and the overall package is considered expensive for what it offers at its current price range of Rs 8.26 lakh to Rs 12.86 lakh. 

The gap with the segment leader is stark. In January 2026, the Maruti Brezza sold 14,065 units nearly 9,000 units fewer than the Tata Nexon, which clocked 23,365 units that month. The Nexon was India's best-selling SUV in five of the last 12 months, including September, October, November, January and February 2026. 

Why the Underbody CNG Tank Is a Direct Nexon Response

The 2026 Brezza facelift spy shots reveal an underbody-mounted CNG tank a technology currently exclusive to the Maruti Victoris mid-size SUV in India. Moving the CNG cylinder from the boot to the underbody eliminates the boot-space compromise that has been a structural limitation of all current CNG compact SUVs. 

This targets a real and documented weakness in the Nexon CNG's proposition. The Tata Nexon CNG uses a dual-cylinder setup mounted in the boot with a combined capacity of 60 litres water equivalent. The Brezza CNG carries a single underbody tank at 55 litres marginally lower in capacity but positioned to preserve full boot space, something no other factory-fit CNG compact SUV currently offers. 

On efficiency, the Brezza already wins convincingly. The current Brezza CNG returns an ARAI-certified 25.51 km/kg against the Nexon CNG's 17.44 km/kg a difference that, in a segment where running costs are a primary purchase driver, represents a significant practical advantage for the Brezza in the updated model's favour. 

Among factory-fit CNG compact SUVs in India, only Maruti and Tata currently offer this as a standard fitment. Renault's Kiger and Nissan's Magnite provide CNG only through dealer-level installation. Skoda and Mahindra are reportedly evaluating CNG for the Kylaq and XUV 3XO respectively, but these remain unconfirmed.

The Creta Angle: Price Bracket Ambition

The Hyundai Creta retained second place in FY2026 UV sales with its highest-ever fiscal year volume of 2,01,921 units a 4 percent year-on-year increase. It remains Hyundai's bestselling model in India and continues to be a benchmark in the midsize SUV segment, maintaining consistent demand despite new launches including the Tata Sierra, Duster, and Maruti Victoris. 

The Brezza's estimated post-facelift price range of Rs 8.90 lakh to Rs 14.00 lakh, as listed on CarWale's upcoming cars section, places its top variants in direct overlap with the Creta's entry-level trims a pricing corridor Maruti has been unable to occupy credibly with an updated product. A freshened exterior, larger touchscreen, and new six-speed manual gearbox, as indicated by spy shots, are precisely the feature gaps that made the Brezza feel underspecified against Creta's interior quality at comparable prices.

What the Facelift Changes Full Breakdown

Spy shots confirm revised front and rear styling, updated LED lighting signatures, and redesigned alloy wheels. The rear tail lamp layout appears different from the current model, while the front fascia is expected to receive a refreshed grille and bumper design. Additional changes include a larger touchscreen infotainment unit and a new six-speed manual gearbox. The mechanical base is expected to continue with the 1.5-litre petrol engine alongside the updated CNG option, with hybrid technology potentially added at a later stage. 

The Competitive Equation at Launch

The Brezza facelift is arriving into a segment that has hardened around it. Tata Motors is already developing a next-generation Nexon internally codenamed 'Garud', expected in showrooms in the second half of 2026. The new Nexon is based on a heavily modified version of the existing X1 platform, with an overhauled exterior and interior design in line with newer Tata models, and is expected to continue petrol and CNG powertrains. 

In other words, Maruti is bringing a facelifted Brezza into a segment where its primary target the Nexon is preparing a full generational replacement. Whether the underbody CNG advantage, efficiency lead, and design refresh are enough to sustainably close a near-9,000-unit monthly sales gap remains the central question the 2026 Brezza facelift must answer.

The 2026 Brezza facelift is expected to launch later this year. A launch timeline and confirmed specifications have not been officially announced by Maruti Suzuki.
